The St. Paul Park Refinery has a full-time, exempt opening for Lab Supervisor. The position reports to the Technical Services Manager. The Lab Supervisor’s main job duties are to provide support, leadership, and direction to employees in the Lab, and to effectively manage the operation of the Lab.
Acts as liaison between the lab and other departments. Serve as a technical resource for operational issues including problem solving, engineering studies, and unit surveys. Implement non-routine studies.
Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements such as Process Safety Management (PSM).
Ensures the laboratory’s operations adhere to the elements of good lab practice, such as written, documented methods of analysis (SOP’s), verifiable training of analysts, and applicable standards of quality control and quality assurance.
Ensure reliable and efficient laboratory operations. Coordinate equipment support at laboratories.
Manage those individuals responsible for lab operation. Implements and manage test schedules.
Understands refinery related government regulations and interface with government inspectors. Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements for final products and environmental testing. Final review of all process and certification data.
Demonstrate proficiency with laboratory software and instrumentation. Serve as administrator for the laboratory information system and data acquisition software.
Implements and/or initiates non-routine lab studies relating to plant operation.
Prepare and steward laboratory yearly capital and expense budgets.
Reviews and supervises laboratory safety training.
Oversees routine and non-routine maintenance of laboratory equipment.
Enforces policies; can resolve problems and manage issues related to employees.
Reviews and evaluates job performance of all lab personnel including 3 salaried and up to 16 hourly employees.
Prepares schedules for rotating shift employees.
Responsible for following and enforcing all safety rules and guidelines as established by the Refinery. Ensure overall safe operation of the laboratory, which includes the laboratory safety and chemical hygiene program
B.S. in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or equivalent work experience. M.S. in Chemistry preferred.
Minimum ten years of experience in a Petroleum refinery or petrochemical laboratory, including hands-on experience with instrumentation, test material, wet test methods and ASTM testing processes.
At least 3 years supervisory experience.
