Provides support to Operations management of assigned area/zone to ensure safe, environmentally sound and optimum operation of process units. Focuses efforts on development of unit personnel’s ability to safely operate and efficiently utilize process equipment, anticipate operational problems, troubleshoot, and respond to problems quickly.  Communicates unit operational issues, performance indicators, constraints and status to refinery departments. 

Key Responsibilities

  •  Through regular field presence ensures assigned area/zone operations are conducted safely and efficiently in environmentally sound manner to comply with operating plan. Receives and executes instructions from Superintendent Operations/Manager Area Operations.  Coordinates readiness reviews, Operating Procedures reviews and operating limit policy reviews. 


  •  Promotes operational excellence in creating and implementing sustainable work processes ensuring safe, reliable, effective and environmentally sound operations.  Assists team in identifying opportunities to optimize process unit performance, standardize work processes and streamline workflows with support from technical disciplines. Acts as change agent to instill continuous improvement mindset.  Communicates process units’ data to shift teams regularly to promote understanding of current conditions and issues/problems impacting performance.  Analyzes suggestions to determine if substantive and sustainable improvements are feasible and presents to management for approval.   


  •  Works with technical disciplines to troubleshoot and resolve unit performance issues.  Mentors team to improve quality of issue identification and resolution.   


  •  Mentors Operators and coaches Operations Shift Supervisors.  


  •  Ensures compliance with applicable Environmental Health Safety procedures and regulations.  Coordinates process hazard analysis.  Completes assigned management of change (MOC) action items.  Participates in incident investigations and communicates "lessons learned".   Conducts safety audits. Tracks progress for action items related to incident investigations, MOC, hazard and operability study (HAZOP) to completion and address deficiencies.  


  •  Collaborates with Training on design, creation, implementation and maintenance of training curriculum for operators.  Maintains accurate and current area/zone operating procedures and training manuals.   May certify operator training competency. 



  • Minimum high school diploma or GED required.


  • Minimum 7 years’ experience in refinery operations with minimum 3 years as front-line refinery operations supervisor required.


Physical ability to perform essential job duties and work extended hours including nights and weekends in process operations environment.  Work may be conducted during periods of inclement weather. Must be able to access all areas of refinery including use of stairs and/or ladders to inspect critical process and mechanical equipment. Must be available to respond to upset conditions during off-hours.
